New partner and new contest
Please welcome aboard Gas King as the new LethbridgeTraffic.ca contest partner.
The Gas King history started in 1960, when Don and Georgia Morris started a bulk farm fuel service in nearby Shaughnessy. Mr Morris saw an opportunity to diversify the company’s offering with retail trade, and in in May 1985, he started a chain of gas stations with his son, Brent.
In the early 1990s, the Morris family saw further ways to diversify Gas King Oil, the new business name, and introduced car washes and convenience stores.
Mr. Morris passed away in 1992, leaving his family to operate the business and Ms. Morris to head the company as its second president. 10 years ago, Brent purchased all the company’s shares and became its third president.
Gas King operates six locations throughout Southern Alberta, providing fuel services, select car washes and comprehensive convenience services. You can follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
And they have agreed to sponsor this month’s contest by providing a Gas King $25 gift card! If you win, you could use it for gas, Williwas, car washes, or anything else your heart fancies at Gas King.
So, onto the contest question.
In the comments below, please share with us your favourite fuel-saving tip.
Contest closes 23:59 Friday night, and the winner will be drawn randomly from the comments below.

I get someone else to drive ;) Saves lots of gas!
If the wait is long, I turn off the engine drive thrus.
I also try to avoide drive thrus as much as possible. B
I go up and down whoop up everyday!! I eventually gave up on racing everyone to the top (and wasting gas while doing it). Now I coast down to the other side of the hill until about 70km/hr and then I slowly begin the climb up. I do not allow myself to over accelerate like the other maniacs and by the time I get to the top of the hill I am going the speed limit of 60km. It saves me gas and money on speeding tickets ;)
I drive at neutral Down Whoop up I hope it’s not illegal, does it even work in newer cars? idk
I keep my eye on that speedometer! Even the tiniest bit of speeding affects my gas mileage, so I be as careful as I can to stick to the speed limit!
I check my tires are properly inflated and I drive about 5% under the posted speed limit.
Driving the speed limit.
I used to carpool with as many people in my car as possible.
Recently, though, I sold my car, and now I ride a bike :) – I pitch in for gas when friends give me rides.
Gas saving tips - don’t accelerate quickly, walk when it’s possible, keep you tires inflated.
I save gas by not driving an obnoxiously large pick up truck!
Driving the speed limit and walking when i need to go somewhere and it’s only 10 minutes away!
I drive the speed limit, make sure my tires are properly inflated, open my car windows rather than use the a/c, and walk short distances.
carpooling is a great way to go now a days but I still say during the summer taking the bus , biking and walking is a good way to go you save a lot of gas during the spring summer and fall months weather permitting that is and only driving when you have to that’s the best way to go on saving gas
so that is my tip on saving gas
Lori
To the guy coasting in neutral down Whoop-Up, you’ll actually use more gas doing that than if you just leave it in gear. In modern cars, when you’re not on the gas and going down a hill you’re using no gas, it’s called DFCO (deceleration fuel cut-off). My tip… when stopped for more than ten seconds it’s better to shut the car off than to idle because of the reliability of modern starters. Not recommended to do this while in traffic, however.
I walk. And when I can’t walk, I ride my bike. And when I can’t ride my bike, I’ll drive… but I never idle and rarely drive alone!
Besides the obvious, slowing down, keep the tires properly inflated and not slamming the pedal down after every red light, one thing that works great right now is opening a window. Air conditioning can add some strain to the gas budget. Get your car on a diet; clean out your car, the added junk in the trunk means your moving around excess weight using up fuel as well. And when it’s time to fuel up, of course go to your local Gas King, their friendly service will improve your day and lead to less road rage, which also burns up costly fuel. Drive Safe!
Put the vechicle in neutral while going downhill always gets me to the gas station when im low on gas.
Though by doing so you are using more gas.
I try to keep my tank above half, makes it seem like I’m spending less on gas. =)
Don’t overfill the tank.
When I am driving on the highways I drive right behind a SEMI truck, drafting is great:) saves me enough gas to get where i am going!
Gas seems to be cheaper early and mid week compared to weekends. Frequently cleaning or changing the air filter really seems to help as well.
Invest in a compact car or hybrid rather than large trucks and suv’s
I keep my vehicle properly maintained so as to not burn extra fuel.
I pay attention to the traffic lights in front of me so I’m not accelerating towards a red light. I avoid quick starts, use smooth acceleration and try to avoid sudden stops (although with the number of cars with broken signal lights in Lethbridge that isn’t always possible!).
I organize my trips when I go across the coulee. Do shopping, banking, visiting all in one trip rather than making multiple trips across town. I have even organized my shopping lists so that I make less trips. I make one big shopping trip a month and then do fresh stuff 2-3 times a month!
I drive a compact car but walk or take the bus to work whenever I can. I also shut my car off if I have to wait in lineups for things like car washes.
I like to use cruise control on the highways. It prevents going to slow and then accelerating too much. Does using cruise control really help save gas?
